The lovely Melville Castle Hotel, just a half an hour from Edinburgh, sits on a 54 acre private estate with eight centuries of Scottish history.
The present castle building was built in the late 18th century and had King George IV, Sir Walter Scott and Queen Victoria among its most notable visitors.
It’s been renovated and modernized plenty since then obviously, and the interiors are a real treat. The interior design brave for such a historic building.
They don’t hold back on bold patterns and colors, which could have been a bit of a mess in the wrong hands. Here though it really works.
Rooms range from singles all the way up to large suites to sleep four in great comfort. Rooms are impressive across the board, with their entry level single rooms getting much the same attention to detail as the more expensive suites.
Check your room options out on the booking page here.
In the castle’s vaulted cellars lies their Brasserie Restaurant. It’s an atmospheric, romantic place with burgundy walls, an open fire and candlelit tables.
Food is a good mix of what could be seen as modern British, and international. It feels fine dining but with a general lack of pretentiousness.
Most of the menu is locally sourced and they have an extensive wine list which covers the globe.
The Library Bar is a nicely old school bar, which suits a castle hotel. Treat yourself to one of their fine whiskies in a homely, cozy atmosphere.
They also do whisky flights/tasting sessions here and, during the day, some flamboyant afternoon teas.
Some Guest Reviews:
“A castle with all the facilities! Prepared to be amazed by the beautiful interiors. Bathroom was so spacious with a beautiful bath, and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The surrounding area is a forest with a stream running . Bettet to spend the whole time here to enjoy the sheer beauty of it…..”
“From beginning to end the whole experience was fantastic! After a poor start to our holiday, the flat we rented in Edinburgh was appalling, the staff at Melville Castle were amazing and couldn’t do enough to ensure that our time with them was comfortable. All the staff were accommodating, polite and nothing was too much trouble! Breakfast was superb, locally sourced, well cooked food, with as much coffee and toast as we wanted…. Would defo rely recommend for anyone wanted a true Scottish experience, with the best of both worlds…. Lovely grounds and a peaceful setting but a stones throw from Edinburgh…..”
