The enchanting Augill Castle Hotel has stood proud in Cumbria, England’s, Upper Eden Valley, for nearly two hundred years.
It also has some of the country’s loveliest rural regions at its doorstep – the North Pennines, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lakeland Fells.
Built in 1841, in the very popular (at the time) Neo-Gothic style, Augill Castle started life as a grand country retreat and is still as grand as ever in its present incarnation as a luxury hotel.
It is a very homely place, one which eschews needless formality and offers more the feeling of a stay with long-lost relatives.

You will find all the accommodation spacious and well turned out, with the interior design showing a nice blend of styles.

The castle and grounds are yours to explore, along with a maximum of thirty fellow guests.
The great hall, drawing room, music room, library, conservatory bar, dining hall, cosy art deco cinema, and lovely green lawns (which include a tennis court), are all yours for the duration of your stay. It is very much a place to feel at home.
They have excellent Italian food at the castle hotel from the self-explanatory ‘Augill Italian Kitchen’. This can be enjoyed in the company of your fellow guests and hosts in the grand castle dining hall.
The setting is formal but the atmosphere is familiar and informal. On Fridays and Saturdays particularly they host some legendary dinner parties.
Sunday is Pizza Night, where you can also delve into some large salads and sumptuous desserts while on Mondays and Thursdays they serve seasonally inspired two-course traditional suppers.
There is no evening food on Tuesday and Wednesday but they do serve Afternoon Tea with sweet or savoury treats every day until 6 pm and they also serve a tremendous daily breakfast (for an extra fee.)
There is a well-stocked honesty bar at Augill too where guests can avail of a selection of drinks as well as various snacks and treats throughout the day.

In Cumbria, northwest England, the castle hotel lies just six miles from the famous Yorkshire Dales National Park but also offers easy access to the North Pennines and the more ruggedly mountainous terrain of the Lake District.
The location is quite isolated which very much adds to its charm; the immediate area is gorgeously peaceful and rural.
The nearest settlements are the little village of Brough around a mile away and, slightly farther away, the larger town of Kirkby Stephen.
The castle lies 20 minutes from Junction 38 of the M6, around a two-hour drive from Manchester and Leeds, and an hour from York, Lancaster, Newcastle, and the border with Scotland at Gretna Green.
