Tucked away beyond Kilchoan on the remote Ardnamurchan Peninsula, Mingary Castle Hotel is far removed from anywhere you might casually pass through. It’s this gorgeously isolated setting and the commanding Atlantic views that made it on to our favourites list. It’s a 13th-century stronghold that spent much of its later life in ruin before a careful two-year restoration brought its nine-foot-thick defensive walls and Georgian-era additions back into use. It’s a rare example of a true castle hotel in Scotland where authenticity hasn’t been diluted.
