Château de Cop-Choux is an atmospheric, authentic, late 18th century château hotel lying between Nantes and Angers, on the old border between Brittany and the historical province of Anjou.

It may be a little rustic for some but others will appreciate its homely, family like atmosphere and its lovely sense of the past, two things that can be lacking in many of France’s more corporate château hotels; hotels that consciously aim to be more hotel than château.

You accommodation choices range, in terms of price, from Classic rooms to Prestige and Deluxe rooms. All of these are doubles but there is also a Family Room which sleeps up to four, with two king size beds, in semi-separate quarters. You can check your options on the booking page here.

All of the rooms are very spacious and have a distinct old fashioned elegance, with many classic decorative features. They generally eschew the modern (though there is WiFi, there is no TV or mini-bar etc. for example) in favour of classic styling, though you may find the odd modern furniture piece looking slightly adrift here and there.

Comfort is not spared. The beds, all of which are king size, are terrifically comfortable to sleep on and the spaces are neat and clean with crisp linens and soothing pastel shades throughout.

The 45 acre grounds have a river flowing through it and is divided between a semi-wild wooded area and landscaped gardens in which you’ll find an outdoor swimming pool (open from May to October) and tennis courts. Racquets etc. can be hired from reception and for any overexertions that may occur you can follow with one of their range of professional massage services.

The Château de Cop Choux restaurant is developing a strong reputation in the region for both excellent food and a commitment to eco-principles.  The vast majority of their ingredients are produced within 50 km of the château and are organic as much as possible, down to the coffee and the wines.

The wine list is made by the sommelier of Caves de Longchamp, one of Nantes’ most prodigious wine shops and is composed of mostly organic wines, with a particular effort made to highlight the work of small, local independent producers.

Note that non-guests can also attend the restaurant so reservations might need to be made the day before if you would like to dine in the elegant main dining room. Though if it happens to be booked out, the full menu can also be enjoyed in one of the three lounge rooms or on the terrace.

The château is less than a half an hour by car, east of Nantes, near the historic town of Ancenis, and close to the A11, the main route between Paris, Nantes, Le Mans and Angers (about 40 minutes away by car).

Coming by train from Paris will mean taking the TGV Atlantique which will get you in Nantes in about 2 hours, then transfer to the TER to Ancenis from where you can take a taxi for the ten minute journey to the hotel. The nearest airport is Nantes Atlantique Airport about 45 minutes away by car.

Château de Cop-Choux can make an excellent base for exploring the Loire Valley, a 300km long stretch of some of France’s most lovely countryside, famed for elaborate châteaux, vineyards and fertile green hills. The staff at Cop-Choux can help out with advice and recommendations and organize tours etc.

A river cruise along the Loire can a wonderfully relaxing day out, for extra ambience try one on a toue, one of the traditional flat-bottomed wooden boats that were used for centuries to transport wine and other goods up and down the Loire.

“One magical place to rest and enjoy classical ambience and un-spoilt nature just 30 minutes away from busy Nantes. Accomplished chef does not fail to deliver sinful tastes @ very reasonable prices. For my future trips to Nantes I will look no further!..”

“Superb. What a beautiful place!! Beautiful room. Had a lovely 3 course meal. Young couple who met us were really helpful and friendly…”
