  • The 4 Star Château de Labro is a luxury vineyard hotel & spa near the town of Rodez in central France’s Occitanie region, previously known as Midi-Pyrénées. The medieval château oozes old world elegance and the grounds have charming gardens, a swimming pool, orchards and vineyards. There is a very fine restaurant at the château too and the food and the wine is superb.

For an extra novel stay, if a medieval château bedroom doesn’t appeal, you can also spend the night at the luxury treehouse in the gardens.

    THE ACCOMMODATION:

The treehouse is a very popular choice so can get booked out months in advance. It is a fine piece of engineering, architecture and design and once inside it feels more like luxury studio apartment than what you might imagine a treehouse to be.

The 16th century château itself has charmingly romantic rooms, with antique furniture pieces and four poster beds. The rooms are mainly doubles but there is also a family room which can sleep up to four, as well as a self catering apartment to also sleep up to four.

Being a luxury hotel you can expect the accommodation to be high quality. Comfort is paramount, and the decor is delightfully old French; quaint and old fashioned, but subtly blended here and there with modern touches.

    PRICES:

Check out all the details – prices, reviews and more photos – on the booking page here.

    FACILITIES & THINGS TO DO:

The interiors of the chateau are simply beautiful, including the elegant dining hall. Their food as mentioned above is superb, with local, seasonal ingredients as much as possible, and they also have an excellent local wine list.

From their own vineyards they produce a Clos Labro, a white from the 6 varieties of grape grown on site; Petit Manseng, Muscat Petit Grain,  Colombard, Chardonnay and Viognier. Theirs is not a commercial, industrial business though it is very much boutique which makes it quite special, and they produce only 1500 bottles a year. The only place you can buy Clos Labro in fact is in Château de Labro itself.

Guests can lounge around the gardens, enjoy a swim at the 20m swimming pool or be pampered at the spa. They have massage services, a sauna, a hot tub and a nice range of health and beauty treatments.

    THE LOCATION:

The chateau is less than 5km from the town of Rodez, well known for its stunning medieval cathedral and its international airport which has budget flights to many European destinations. It is near the southern part of the Massif Central, the enormous plateau region of south central France with many wild and wonderful rural landscapes.

This area is some of France’s most beautiful villages too; Conques, Najac, Brousse le Château, Belcastel and Sauveterre du Rouergue being just some examples. The city of Toulouse is around 150km to the south west while Montpellier is about 180 to the south east.

    SOME HISTORY:

The Château was built in the 16th century by a wealthy local family by the name of De Creato. It remained with them for nearly 100 years before being sold to the De Patris’ a somewhat locally illustrious family which had among its member Guillaume de Patris, Lieutenant of Cardinal d’Armagnac who became famous for foiling a secret plot to invade Rodez during the Holy Wars.

During the early 19th century the property passed on to the De Meyniers, another family which made a name for itself. The murder of Rodez prosecutor Fualdès in 1817 became a notorious affair when it was uncovered that local magistrate, and fervent royalist, Joseph de Meynier, knowingly had innocent people executed to cover up for the real perpetrators; some fellow local royalist activists.

In 2001, the current owners, Jean and Nizou Rouquet, bought Chateau de Labro and by all accounts a marvelous renovation job was done. They then enlisted the management skills of Jean-Michel Rouquet who alongside his son Jean-Michel, still looks after the hotel today.

    WHAT OTHER GUESTS SAY:

“A really lovely hotel experience. Luxurious chateau in beautiful countryside. Excellent dinner and superb breakfast. Everything home made and the dining environment quite the best. Great swimming pool in 34 degree heat. Just perfect. Comfy bed and cute room even though at the lower end of the price scale for the hotel. Will return….”

“The grounds were beautiful and serene – the chateau was beautiful and well appointed. Great in-room amenities. The hotel restaurant was one of the best dinners of our 2 week trip, and the breakfast was delicious…Great location for exploring Aveyron surrounding area. Great hikes and drives nearby. A perfect chateau hotel for a relaxing getaway….”

The 4 Star Château de la Caze is a very romantic, Renaissance era chateau hotel with a fairy tale like setting in the Gorges du Tarn near Rodez, a canyon gorge that is one of this area of France’s most well known natural wonders. The chateau has an intimate, boutique hotel feel and a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. It also some lovely gardens, a heated outdoor swimming pool, a spa bath, a gym and an excellent gastronomic restaurant amongst other things. THE ACCOMMODATION: They have a choice of rooms and suites available from standard double rooms to 40 m² suites. Most of them are in the chateau itself with some suites also to be found in the Maison de Martine, an adjacent converted old farm building. All the accommodation choices are doubles but in the Maison de Martine suites you can sleep an extra two people using the sofa bed (though for an extra charge). Some people have reported that some of the standard double rooms are a bit on the cramped size, to be certain of adequate space you can go for the superior rooms or above. Of the suites the only thing to decide is whether to take one READ MORE

Château de Sédaiges near Aurillac, Auvergne, France is a gorgeously rustic property with an interesting mix of medieval and neo-gothic architecture, and a history going all the way back to the 12th century. It is situated in 17 acres of parkland with its own pond and woods and, in the neat gardens, a swimming pool. The hotel is family run, it has been run by the same family since 1230 in fact, something which certainly makes a stay here extra special. You’ll find the service extremely warm and personable; the owners show a genuine interest in their guests, and a great sense of pride in the château and their associated family history. THE ACCOMMODATION: All the accommodation is B&B and they have a mixture of rooms and suites, from double rooms to a two double bed suite. All of them are comfortable, neat and clean, and classically decorated with many antique furniture and art pieces. Check your options on the booking page here. There is a tangible ambience of staying in a château bedroom as opposed to a hotel bedroom here, without much in the way of obvious modernity to distract from the experience (apart from WiFi and relatively modern bathrooms); everything seems, READ MORE

The very pretty Chateau de Maraval is where 15th century design meets 21st and somehow they get along quite nicely. Its unashamedly contemporary interior design being so well done it doesn’t seem at all incongruous on a five centuries’s old canvas. The chateau is a boutique hotel but with only four rooms (book as quick as you can!), very friendly hosts and a down to earth atmosphere, it feels more like a gathering place for long lost friends. The breakfast here is a great feast and served up until noon, later on you can enjoy complimentary homemade cakes and snacks, coffee and tea etc. The owners sometimes organize evening dinners for the guests too and there are also some great restaurants in the surrounding area. The chateau itself looks fairytale like from the outside, especially as it is surrounded by some lovely deep, peaceful woodland – very inviting to explore. There is also a swimming pool at the property, a small gym and spa facilities. Note: neither children nor pets are allowed at Château de Maraval. REVIEWS: “The chateau exceeded our very high expectations in every way possible. The location is peaceful, the air fresh and invigorating. The house itself READ MORE
