The 4 Star Château de Labro is a luxury vineyard hotel & spa near the town of Rodez in central France’s Occitanie region, previously known as Midi-Pyrénées. The medieval château oozes old world elegance and the grounds have charming gardens, a swimming pool, orchards and vineyards. There is a very fine restaurant at the château too and the food and the wine is superb.
For an extra novel stay, if a medieval château bedroom doesn’t appeal, you can also spend the night at the luxury treehouse in the gardens.
THE ACCOMMODATION:
The treehouse is a very popular choice so can get booked out months in advance. It is a fine piece of engineering, architecture and design and once inside it feels more like luxury studio apartment than what you might imagine a treehouse to be.
The 16th century château itself has charmingly romantic rooms, with antique furniture pieces and four poster beds. The rooms are mainly doubles but there is also a family room which can sleep up to four, as well as a self catering apartment to also sleep up to four.
SOME HISTORY:
The Château was built in the 16th century by a wealthy local family by the name of De Creato. It remained with them for nearly 100 years before being sold to the De Patris’ a somewhat locally illustrious family which had among its member Guillaume de Patris, Lieutenant of Cardinal d’Armagnac who became famous for foiling a secret plot to invade Rodez during the Holy Wars.
During the early 19th century the property passed on to the De Meyniers, another family which made a name for itself. The murder of Rodez prosecutor Fualdès in 1817 became a notorious affair when it was uncovered that local magistrate, and fervent royalist, Joseph de Meynier, knowingly had innocent people executed to cover up for the real perpetrators; some fellow local royalist activists.
In 2001, the current owners, Jean and Nizou Rouquet, bought Chateau de Labro and by all accounts a marvelous renovation job was done. They then enlisted the management skills of Jean-Michel Rouquet who alongside his son Jean-Michel, still looks after the hotel today.
