Schloss Kapfenstein is a charming, family owned boutique hotel with a thousand years of history, an excellent gourmet restaurant and a gorgeous hilltop setting over-looking the vineyards of Volkanland in Austria’s green and picturesque eastern Styria region.
The castle estate also produces its own wine, wine which many consider to be among the best in the region, and a full compliment of enotourism activities are offered.
THE ACCOMMODATION:
With just 16 rooms and suites the castle is very much a boutique hotel and the choice is pretty straightforward; either a double room or a double suite. Both are extremely spacious and comfortable with the rooms covering 20 m² and the suites, which have a semi-separate seating area, a full 40 m².
They both also display lots of rustic old style elegance, with wooden floors and beams and lots of nice antique furniture pieces, while also having modern hotel mod cons including flat screen satellite TV, WiFi, safe and minibar. All accommodation is B&B and the breakfast is a generous feast, worthy of a hotel with such high culinary standards.

FACILITIES & THINGS TO DO:
Schloss Kapfenstein may not be well known among foreign visitors to Styria but among natives it has a long standing reputation for excellent food and wine. The restaurant here serves up hearty traditional Austrian food, or ‘Light-creative-Styrian’ as they call it here, with creativity and flair and you can be assured of the quality of the accompanying wine list, mostly coming from the medieval era ‘Lions Cellar’ of the castle winery.
Kapfenstein is also a centre of wine tourism in the area and guests can tour the vineyards and the winery in the company of their knowledgeable hosts as well as partake in wine tasting sessions etc.
The surrounding area is great for hiking and cycling, with plenty of hills but none too taxing. Bikes can be rented from the castle and you can also arrange things like horse riding, walking tours and visits to other vineyards in the area.
Note: The hotel is adults only, though pets are allowed!
THE LOCATION:
The castle is in the heart of Styria’s Vulkanland region, near the borders with both Hungary and Slovenia. This part of Austria is famous for two things, first and foremost its wine but also its series of ex-volcanic hills from where the area gets its name (Volkanland), on one of which Schloss Kapfenstein lies.
The city of Graz is less than an hour away by car, or two hours if coming by train (There is a train station in the village of Kapfenstein about 5 minutes walk away) while the journey from Vienna will take roughly two hours.
REVIEWS:
“This is a great old castle facility that has modernized fixtures, etc. inside the rooms. We had stayed here several years back, and at that time felt it was one of the favorite places on that trip. So we had to come back!!!! It was great this a
time as well….”“A little piece of heaven in Austria….”
