Castello Di Monterone is a magical castle hotel in Central Italy perched on a hill overlooking the wonderful city of Perugia, Umbria.
It’s very convenient to the city centre, just over a kilometre from the old town on the road to Assisi, but tremendously peaceful and serene.
The building goes back at least seven centuries and, though now a luxury hotel, it has been carefully restored to reflect its abundance of history.
The first thing a castle hotel needs to get right if it wants to brand itself a luxury hotel is to not damage, or even to distract from, the historic fabric of the building and Castello di Monterone gets this perfectly right.
It is very much a luxury hotel but the modern conveniences and comforts are subtle and respectful.
The two castle restaurants are up there with the best – one, il Postale, being Michelin-starred. Other facilities include a swimming pool and spa facilities.
Castello Di Monterone is child friendly, but not pet friendly.
